Why We Believe Adults Need Recess Too

Somewhere between childhood and a full calendar, most adults stop giving themselves permission to just play. THE MOVING CIRCLE is our attempt to hand some of that back.

Nobody schedules recess for adults. Childhood comes with a built-in permission slip for unstructured, slightly silly fun — a break in the middle of the day set aside for no reason other than to play. Somewhere around the start of a career, most people lose that permission slip and never quite find another one. THE MOVING CIRCLE: THE FIRST JOURNEY exists partly to hand a version of it back, for one day at a time.

Play Is Not the Opposite of Productive

There is a quiet myth that rest and play are what happen after the important things are handled — a reward, not a requirement. Most research on burnout and wellbeing says close to the opposite: unstructured social play is one of the more reliable ways adults regulate stress, and going without it for too long has real costs, not just a vague sense of tiredness. A day spent laughing with strangers on a bus is not indulgence squeezed in around real life. For a lot of people, it functions as maintenance for real life.

Why It Works Better With Strangers

Play with people who already know you carries expectations — you are still, on some level, the version of yourself they are used to. Play with strangers comes with none of that. Nobody on the bus has a fixed idea of who you are supposed to be, which makes it easier to be a slightly looser, slightly louder version of yourself for a day. Several riders from the first journey described this exact feeling afterward, usually with some surprise at how much they needed it.

One Day Is a Small Ask

Nobody is being asked to overhaul a calendar or rearrange a life around this. It is one day, structured loosely enough to leave room for actual spontaneity, aimed at doing the one thing most adult schedules quietly cut first. If it has been a while since you did something with no purpose beyond enjoying it, that alone might be the best reason to book a seat.
