Beyond the Bus: The Local Stops That Make The Journey
THE MOVING CIRCLE is not just a bus ride — it is a route through the people and places that make Abidjan worth stopping for. Here is how the stops get chosen.
It would be simple to describe THE MOVING CIRCLE: THE FIRST JOURNEY as a bus with good music and good company that drives around Abidjan for a day. That description is not wrong, but it skips the part that takes the most work behind the scenes: deciding where the bus actually stops.
Choosing Places, Not Just Points on a Map
A stop earns its place on the route for one of two reasons. Either it offers something riders genuinely cannot get anywhere else in the city, or it is run by people whose story is worth ten minutes of everyone's attention. A roadside grill with a following built over twenty years qualifies. A generic photo-op location, however scenic, usually does not.
Small Businesses Get a Bigger Room
Every stop is also a small act of support for the vendors and owners behind it. A single visit from thirty-one people in one afternoon is a meaningful bump for a local business, and it is one none of them had to pay an advertising fee to receive. Several of the people we have visited on planning trips did not know what to make of it at first — a group appearing out of nowhere to eat, ask questions, and genuinely mean the compliments. That reaction alone tells us the stop belongs on the route.
The City as a Character, Not a Backdrop
Abidjan has thirteen communes, more neighborhoods than any one Saturday can cover, and far more history than a nine-hour route can hold. So each journey picks a thread rather than trying to tell the whole story at once — one stretch of the lagoon, one market, one strip of food stalls that locals swear by and most newcomers have never heard of. The goal is not to be comprehensive. It is to leave every rider with at least one place they intend to come back to on their own.
If you know a stop that deserves a spot on a future route, tell us. Some of the best ones so far came from exactly that kind of tip.
